Tips For The Month

Happy New Year from modern-manners-and-etiquette.com! We hope that your holidays found you well and happy.

Being a new year, we all have things in our lives that we are wanting to change. Resolutions are a good idea, however so many fall by the wayside, because we try to make too many changes too quickly. The best way that we have found to make changes is to do it a little bit at a time.

Recently, we were introduced to a book by Darren Hardy entitled, The Compound Effect. In this book the author talks about setting goals and making small changes repeated over time in order to accomplish these goals. It is an amazing concept that has been proven time and time again to produce the changes that are desired.

If some of your goals this year are to show better manners or act with more etiquette, this is a wonderful way to reach these goals. You will not be able to become Mr. or Miss Manners overnight. What you want to do is take one aspect of manners that you would like to improve and work toward changing that. Maybe it is to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ more often or use your workplace email etiquette. These are all attainable goals if they are worked at in small pieces one day at a time.

Another key to changing our manners and etiquette is our attitude. It is impossible to show better manners and etiquette when you feel you are better than everyone around you or if you feel like the world is out to get you. It is the easiest to say ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ when you are at peace within yourself.

Truly we recommend The Compound Effect as a wonderful read. It will give you wonderful insights and tools to become a well-mannered and happy you for 2011. Best wishes and we look forward to seeing you soon.
