Who to make the check out to for a wedding gift

Great niece is getting married in September and I just received the announcement. I will not be able to attend. I would like to send money for their wedding present but I do not know how to address the check. Do I make it out to her or to both of them with soon to be married name?

Addressing the check
by: Kevin (Modern Manners and Etiquette)

Even though your relationship is with your great niece, you should not address it to only her or use her maiden name. That would be against gift giving etiquette.

Think about it like this: They will be opening the gifts and cards after they have been married (whether it is later that night or at another time). Since they will be married, you really should address the check to both of them and use the married name.

So as an example, the check would be addressed to Mr. and Mrs. John Smith.
